The Game

Basic Rules of Kabaddi

Kabaddi is a fast-paced, high-energy contact sport originating from India, played between two teams of seven players each. Here’s how it’s played:

Objective:

• Score points by sending a player, called a raider, into the opposing team’s half.

• The raider must tag opponents and return to their half without being tackled.

Key Rules:

1. The Raid:

• Raiders enter the opponent’s half chanting “Kabaddi” repeatedly in a single breath.

• Raiders aim to touch one or more defenders before returning safely.

2. Defense:

• Defenders work together to tackle and hold the raider until the raider stops chanting or until their breath runs out.

3. Scoring:

• Raiders earn points for each opponent tagged if they return safely.

• Defenders earn a point if they successfully stop the raider from returning to their half.

4. Eliminations & Revival:

• Tagged or tackled players are temporarily “out” and must sit off-court.

• Players re-enter the game when their team scores points.

5. Duration:

• A standard match has two halves of 20 minutes each with a 5-minute break.

6. Winning:

• The team with the most points at the end wins the match.

Player Eligibility & Guidelines

General Player Rules:

• Each team fields 7 active players on court, with additional substitutes.

• Players must wear uniforms clearly distinguishing teams (shirts and shorts).

• All jewelry and accessories are prohibited during matches for safety.

• Nails must be kept short, and long hair should be tied back.

Kabaddi doesn’t have universal strict rules on player height and weight, but competitions often categorize players into age and weight groups for fairness and safety:

1. Weight Categories (Common Standards):

• Junior/Sub-Junior Level:

• Typically 45kg to 70kg (varies by age group)

• Senior/Open Level (Adult Men):

• Usually 70kg to 85kg or 85kg+ (Open category)

• Senior/Open Level (Adult Women):

• Usually 55kg to 75kg or open category

2. Height:

• There are no official height restrictions.

• Players generally range from about 5’5” (165 cm) to 6’4” (193 cm).

• Height advantages differ by role (raiders typically agile and shorter, defenders often taller).

3. Age:

• Junior/Sub-junior categories typically range from under-12 to under-19.

• Senior/Open is typically for adults aged 18+.
